Due to political changes since its original establishment, the park is now smaller; but still spans 23 000 km² of savannah and shrub lands, supporting up to 114 different mammal species, including the endangered Black Rhinoceros and endemic Black-nosed Impala; as well as some 300 different bird species.

Ancient stone tools and weapons testify to the early Stone Age as well as arrows and spear heads dating to the Iron Age. The Bushmen were some of the earliest settlers in this area. Dr. David Livingstone was the first European to see the Waterfall on the 16th November 1855. He was so impressed by this majestic sight that he named them after his Queen Victoria.  It is also called “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, meaning, in the local language, “the smoke that thunders” which describes the spray and roar as the Zambezi drops over 300 feet into the narrow gorge below.
