Namib Desert Concession
Depart the luxuries of Rostock Ritz and 20 minutes later enter trackless expanse of the Namib. Your attention is diverted from the colourful scenery by the first vehicle getting stuck in the treacherous sands. Letting air out of your tires, as per the guide's instructions during pre-tour departure discourse, now makes sense. Further along, complete concentration is replaced by the first flutterings of fear as the dunes get higher and steeper. Fear is replaced by determination and then pride as the next dune is conquered. Somewhere in this most unspoiled of areas the guide vehicle will stop for lunch. Springbuck, Ostrich and Oryx dot the landscape. The Kuiseb Canyon opens up before the convoy, hundreds of meters below, where one can see the greenery of the river, and across the chasm, the lunar landscape of the rocky Namib. The drive continues along the canyon edge to a crossing at the Kuiseb River. A few miles beyond and camp will be set up near Homeb is set up. Enjoy dinner and story-telling around the campfire.
After breakfast each vehicle is inspected prior to setting off. Yesterday’s bravery evaporates, and the drive between Homeb and Sandwich Harbour seems impossible as you are guided over towering dunes, then travel along a ‘dune street’ looking for a gap from which to tackle the next dune series. By now nervousness makes way for anticipation as you want the next to be higher and steeper. Lunch is again taken in a breathtaking setting somewhere in the sea of dunes. The afternoon is spent getting stuck and unstuck as the dunes start bunching closer together, testing and improving new-found driving skills. Eventually, the guide stops below an imposing slip face and camp is set up - tantalizingly close to the ocean. Rush to put up your tent so you can sprint up the dune to view the setting sun.
An early morning wake up, and a Skeleton Coast fog envelopes everything. Coffee, breakfast, vehicle check, and begin today’s journey by trying to follow the guide as he edges his way up the dune. Driving now takes on a complete different angle as each dune needs to be approached with care because of the limited visibility. Suddenly the mist clears and below is an impressive view of Sandwich Harbour. Inlets, outlets, calm water, flamingoes, and a myriad of other birdlife. Take pictures, YOU’VE MADE IT TO THE TOP! Slowly, head down to the ocean where you must, sadly, had of the keys to the vehicle that was an extension of you for the past 3 days. Drivers will take your vehicle to Walvis Bay.
At the ocean, take your shoes off and take a stroll to the waiting twin-engine speedboat. Once everyone is aboard, surrender control as the skipper speeds off up the Skeleton Coast. A strange feeling of achievement and well-being fills you as you watch the swells of the Atlantic meeting the Namib Desert. Keep an alert eye for Dolphins, Whales, Seals and even Sharks. In what seems no time at all the boat heads towards Pelican Point.
You will arrive in Walvis Bay around lunch time
